Am I the only one just learning about this?

I can't discern from the limited information given whether this is based on Matt's engine or not. I assume so, if it's really a 1985 creation. Also looks like that game that Matt was working on with Elite didn't happen

EDIT: this is probably the wrong forum, if someone wants to move it over to the JSW subforum

I've been aware of the existence of the game ever since it was announced. I haven't tried to purchase it.

It's always seemed like a commercial gimmick to me. I find it ridiculous that suddenly there was so much fuss about a game from 1985, when other games from that year have been known for a long time, including Richard Hallas's excellent "Join The Jet-Set!", and when there are so many other games made in later years which are certainly (I'm saying it even though I haven't played "Willy's Great Adventure") not worse than this game commercialised by Elite Systems.

The author - Terry Lloyd - thinks "it’s one of the most complete and totally customized mods out there (in terms of all new rooms, tiles and sprites)". Well, while I couldn't deny (or confirm) that all of these elements are customised in "Willy's Great Adventure", there are various games out there listed on JSW Central which are all that and much more.

Please note I am not criticising "Willy's Great Adventure" itself. I am critising it being potrayed as something extraordinary (which people who are not familiar with other JSW remakes may buy), while it is not, because there have been many excellent JSW games made over the years (which people familiar with the subject know very well).

No, it is not. According to the article to which you gave the link:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Matthew Smith and Elite have previously announced that they are to co-operate in the development and publication of a new game. ‘Willy’s Great Adventure’ is NOT that game. A further announcement about that game will be made at a later date.

[EDIT: The above comment resulted from my misreading SedricAndCharlie's post.]

Having said all that, it would be nice to be able to play the Spectrum original of "Willy's Great Adventure". I think it is unlikely that we ever will, though, the game being a commercial product for other platforms  .

I think you might have misinterpreted Cedric's comment there, Danny?  (In particular, the phrase 'looks like'.)

I believe you read him saying that Willy's Great Adventure might be a game that Matt Smith was working on with Elite?

Whereas I think what he was saying was that the separate project which the article refers to [as per your quote above] never saw the light of day (didn't happen).

In other words, when he said "looks like", Cedric meant that as in: "it would seem that...", and not: "it resembles..."

Yes, you're right, Ian. I thought SedricAndCharlie was saying, "Also it looks like that game that Matt was working on with Elite which didn't happen", but apparently I added the "which" in my head myself  :o .

Indeed, how would you know that it looked like [resembled] a game which you haven't seen (because it didn't happen!)  :D

I'm starting to wonder if its possible (I've not had chance to see this game however, so it may contain sections or code that mean this is not possible) to convert it so it can be used in a Spectrum emulator or a real machine...

Two problems I see there:

- *If* the game was  originally created on the ZX Spectrum (like back in 1985 or something), it would be like re-converting something to the original platform from another one. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but you probably wouldn't end up with the original, but a variant of it  .

- Since it was (probably still is?) released as a commercial product, converting it to anything could mean encroaching upon the copyright and provoking the copyright's holders anger  :o .
