Jswed2 Suggestions

I was thinking about this earlier. :)

1. Allow easier scrolling when selecting a file to load, as you have to click for each 'movement' I've found. When you're browsing a large directory it can take time. I guess the 'user fix' for this is simply to save into a certain special directory though, so it may be self inflicted in some ways.

2. I was thinking more about the 'Attract Mode' , I think one great improvement here would be to remove Willy from each screen as it is displayed as this way he won't fall or land on a fire cell etc, falling in particular causes room changes and / or it tries to catch the 'life loss' by removing him. I was simply thinking of perhaps how JSW2 has an attract mode, just display objects and nasties etc not Willy himself.

There is one thing I would love to see JSWED be able to do: export all room names from a given game into a text file.

This is not a new suggestion. Dr Andrew Broad put it forward back in message 4969 on Manic Miner & Jet Set Willy Yahoo! Group, where in point 6.5.1 among "Other possible extensions" he suggested the following functionality:

* export the list of rooms as a text-file (like SPECSAISIE RoomsJSW):

[0] "The Off Licence"
[1] "The Bridge"
[2] "Under the MegaTree"
...
(leading and trailing spaces should be stripped or not at the option of the user)

If I could use this function (entire room names would be good for me, I wouldn't worry about the spaces), I would export all room names from all gamma-released games into text files and then merge and edit them into a single PDF file, which I would make available for download at JSW Central. Thus anyone interested could easily check whether any given room name has been used before, or just browse through the entire list.

I note the newer version can support JSW2 which is interesting too. :)

I've not checked to see how the attract mode behaves in the later version of JSWED using a 48K based game. I think the problems with attract mode in previous versions stemmed from the fact that Willy was 'printed' onscreen during the looping, without him it would not error.

I'm not sure how practical is is to code it to stop that during 'attract mode' though.

Without checking it right now, I believe JSWED just inserts the attract mode code based on what the Softricks editor did. If this is the case, Willy is printed onscreen during the looping, which may indeed cause problems.

When I worked on the Final Edition of Steve Worek's "Jet Set Emily: Baby on the Go", at the end of the whole process I rearranged the order of the rooms so as to provide for an error-free attract mode. In the end I managed to achieve the desired result, but it was a lot of work, I must say.

Now, this is not really a suggestion, it's a bug report, but I thought it might not be worth starting a new thread, especially one suggesting that JSWED doesn't work perfectly.

After Windows 10 automatic update earlier this week (I think it was at the beginning of this week, or last weekend perhaps, so around the end of October 2017), JSWED 2.3.7 installled on my computer using Windows 10 stopped working. It launches so that its initial screen can be seen, but when I try to load a game it turns out to be frozen, it doesn't respond at all. I can't close it using its own X sign either. However, it can be closed down without any hassle using the Task Manager.

That Windows 10 update was a big one, the computer had to shut down and restart several times before it was over.

Interestingly, JSWED 2.2.9 installed on the same computer works just fine. But I've grown used to JSWED 2.3.7 so much by now that going back to 2.2.9 does not seem to be a viable option.

Both v. 2.2.9 and v. 2.3.7 had been installed on this computer before the Windows 10 update in question. They had co-existed happily (or, at least, peacefully) before. Now only 2.2.9 works.

I tried reinstalling the 2.3.7 version (without de-installing it first), but to no avail. I mean, it gets installed, but still doesn't work after I launch it.

I have yet to try de-installing it first, and then re-installing, but somehow I have little hope this will help.

Perhaps John Elliott could help out, though? Any assistance with having JSWED 2.3.7 work properly with Windows 10 after this recent update would be much appreciated :).

Has anyone else had the same problem?

i have a rather ageing yet somehow still functioning system which has Windows 10 installed upon it and i have managed to get both versions of JSWED working, currently i am using 2.3.7 .. having said that it is rather buggy and lags here and there, rolling my mouse wheel has some peculiar effects .

However, this may be because i have, to the best of my recollection only ever upgraded my operating systems rather than installing a new ones and when the computer needed an upgrade i just swap out the HDD, To this day my HDD label  is still MSDOS 5...

So it could be that there's some ancient file knocking about somewhere that JSWED relies upon

Another theory is that up until last year i did have a copy of 'The Shining' in my DVD drive for ages...   ;)
