JSW - Memotech MTX version

Greetings! I don't think this version has been covered before (I didn't know it existed until recently).

It's quite similar to the MSX version, but it's not by Cameron Else. It was converted by Mark Lawrence.

Anyway, the interesting bit is that it includes extra screens! There are two I've found, both to the right of The Security Guard. There's maybe more, although I have checked most of the map and haven't found any others so far.

The screens are attached to the post. 'The Front Lawn' is quite interesting as the car moves left and right, making it a rare instance of a large, horizontal moving guardian.

That's great. I'd not recalled seeing that versions before. :)

"Welcome" too. :D

I've not covered the Amiga (or ST if there is one) versions as they are sort of 'remakes' in effect although at some point I would like to.

Its very interesting to see another 8 bit version however. I do have the Z88 version but unable to get it to work properly in an emulator.

I've just had another quick go of it. Some notes:

  • The toilet at the start kills you
  • There is no object in First Landing (and it's not in The Hall either. I wonder where it is?)
  • Big cross in First Landing does not flash
  • Auto-collect Swimming Pool object
  • Beach object counts as two
  • Conservatory Roof - guardian removed so you can get the first object, but platform not extended (like the Software Projects MSX version) so you have to lose a life to get all the objects.
  • The game has a loading screen (below), and plays If I Was a Rich Man as the game loads!

The Amiga version is based on JSW2 and it's very different (it scrolls!). The Atari ST version is a very accurate port of the Spectrum version and includes a couple of extra screens (to the right of Under the Drive, but they're not actually accessible so you have to cheat to see them). The ST version is available on the web but it was never actually released by SP.

I'd be interested if you covered the MSX/Tatung version of JSW2. That definitely has a two unique, extra screens.

Thank you, Martyn, for this information, it's very interesting!  :)

I've just had to look up the Memotech MTX, I haven't come across this machine before.

It's nice to see a couple of extra rooms!

I can see there was also a version of "Manic Miner" for the Memotech MTX. Have you had a look at it as well, by any chance?

Thanks again for posting  :) .

Hello Everyone! I've just joined. :-)

I always loved the look of the Memotech MTX, it has a really high quality extruded Aluminium case (as did Memotech's peripherals for the ZX81). I had no idea that there was a version of JSW for it. Was there much other commercial software produced for it?

For those not familiar with the MTX it is in-fact also a movie star. If you've seen the film 'Weird Science', this was the computer they used to 'create' Kelly Lebrock! :

Welcome!  :)

I guess these pages might answer your question about the software:

I have no relation with these websites whatsoever, they just come up high in a Google search.
