  1. JetSet Willy (Plus/4)

JetSet Willy for the Commodore Plus/4, written by Ian Davison and published by Tynesoft

This in effect an 'enhanced' update of the C16 version with approximately thirty-nine rooms instead of the C16's nineteen. That 'cut down' version can be found here

It too features the 'square stairs' as per the C64 version although they seem slightly easier to negotiate and it is easy to jump through them when appropriate. The choice of rooms included is generally quite sensible and the sprites and colour choices are a good match for the Spectrum/C64/Amstrad/BBC versions given the difference in platforms. There are very few in-game sound effects but the general 'feel' and play of the game is good.

Most of the interior rooms of Willy's mansion are present. The object placement reasonably matches the other main variants however there are more objects to collect given the fact there are less rooms.

There are no 'upper' screens beyond the Conservatory roof area although on the other side of the mansion the East Wall Base is present however there is no upper access beyond East Wall (so no Priest's Hole) and no Beach or West Bedroom.

The Banyan Tree, Wine Cellar and Tool Shed are present however there is no access beyond the right hand side of the Forgotten Abbey. To compensate for this the platforms in the Wine Cellar are slightly re-arranged to allow Willy to climb back out to escape, however an interesting "twist" on this is he cannot then simply jump out to the Back Stairway, the only escape is he must then negotiate the Tool Shed. Another interesting feature is there is no Swimming Pool although Orangery is present there is no downwards exit. The MegaTree is present too, complete with 'all branches'

Please see the screenshots for specifics, there is a screenshot of every room included.

The title screen is simply a mid-centred 'JET SET WILLY' line of text and a scrolling message which reads as follows:

As per the message it can be reasonably assumed this was 'built on' the C16 version even though as I understand it, it was released as a separate version.

    Enjoy!

  2. JetSet Willy (C16)

JetSet Willy for the Commodore C16, written by Ian Davison and published by Tynesoft

This version contains a reasonable adaptation of Willy's mansion given the memory limitations, there are are total of nineteen rooms.

It features the 'square stairs' as per the C64 version although they seem slightly easier to negotiate in this variant. There is no scrolling message on the title screen and very little in-game sound but the general 'feel' and play of the game is quite good, along with sensible choices of sprites being used.

Interestingly some of the missing sprites include the Bathroom toilet and Maria from the Master Bedroom. Although the 'bed' is therefore accessible it does not 'activate' until all objects are collected.

Both tape and disk (.tap and .prg) file formats are included, each one contains the standard C16 version and the tape version also contains on its reverse 'side' the enhanced version for the Plus/4 however a separate file is available for that enhanced version, please see here for details as it is recommended to use the specific version for that variant if you wish to play the 'enhanced Plus/4' version.

A map (author: 'Csabo') is also included too of Willy's smaller mansion.

  3. Manic Miner C16

Manic Miner for the Commodore C16, published by Software Projects in 1986.

The game feels, looks and plays very well indeed. The game layout closely follows the Amstrad and Spectrum versions. Unfortunately I do not have any information on the author of this version.

Both a tape and disk (.tap and .prg) are provided, although the 'game code' is the same with them, merely the media format is different.

It is quite remarkable it fitted into the limited space available on this machine. There have been some compromises to do this however, the ones I have noted are:

    1. There is no title screen as such, the game immediately starts upon loading and restarts upon life loss
    2. There is very little sound. No in game tune and little effects
    3. No animated lives counter, it is a simple "Lives: x" line
    4. Some guardian shapes are recycled and used again and some types present in other versions are not used in this variant
    5. Guardians lack much colour they are typically white
    6. No extra lives are given upon reaching a certain score. Other versions this is typically one extra life per 10K points
    7. The air supply is quite slow to drain generally. I do not think there is any differential between rooms on the initial 'starting supply' of air
    8. In 'Solar Power Generator' the beam does not appear to decrease the air supply or if it does it happens very slowly
    9. In the 'Alien Toilet' caverns that were 'Kong Beast' caverns, the switches are present but have no effect and the 'wall' is always open

Some rooms have been renamed too:

"Miner Willy meets the Kong Beast" is now "Miner Willy and the Toilet"
"Wacky Amoebatron's" is now "Wacky Triangles"
"Attack of the Mutant Telephones" is now "Spinning Thingy's"
"Return of the Alien Kong Beast" is now "Return of the Alien Toilet"
"Skylab Landing Bay" is now "Penguin Sick Bay"
"Amoebatron's Revenge" is now "Logo's Revenge"

Controls are joystick in P2 or the following keys:

    Q,E,T,U = Left
    W,R,Y,I = Right
    Shift/Space = Jump

    K = Pause
    J = Resume

    Enjoy! :)

  4. Manic Miner (C64) Construction Set

Manic Miner 'Construction Set' for the Commodore C64, by Tim of LCS.

This provides a level editor, It does offer options to save or load sets of screens to disk as well as play the game upon finishing editing.

If you were looking for Manic Miner in general for the C64, please see here for an original or here for a cheat version.

The supplied disk image (.D64) appears to contain the standard level set and is playable as you would expect. There are no cheats built into the game core code.

Unfortunately there are no instructions apart from what are provided 'in game' as such although it appears to be completely keyboard controlled for the editor part. The 'main' keys are:

    F1 Next screen
    F3 Previous screen
    F5 Return to menu
    F7 Edit mode

  5. JetSet Willy 2 (C64) Cheat

JetSet Willy 2 'Final Frontier' for the Commodore C64 written by J.Darnell and S.Birtles. This is a cheat version, based upon the original tape (.T64) file. The cheat author is currently unknown.

If you are looking for an original, unaltered JSW2 please see here instead.

Upon loading the following cheat options are offered:

    Unlimited Willy's ? Y/N
    Stop time counter ? Y/N

It should be noted there is no protection against high falls, guardians or fire cells. There is a 'practise' option but it is limited to a single screen typically so it is not quite what it seems.

    Controls:

    [O] Move Willy left
    [P] Move Willy right
    [F1] Pause game
    [F3] Music on/off
    [space] Jump

  6. JetSet Willy (C64) Cheat

JetSet Willy for the Commodore C64, written by Shahid Ahmad. This is a cheat version, provided by 'Luis/CMM'

If you are looking for an original unaltered game, please see here

The following options are offered upon loading:

    Unlimited lives: Y/N
    Stop time: Y/N
    Sprite collision: Y/N

It should be carefully noted that there is no 'fall from any height' cheat nor will the collision cheat protect from fire cells, only from guardians.

The original JetSet Willy for the Commodore C64, written by Shahid Ahmad.

A tape file (.t64) is provided.

The game plays quite differently in 'feel' to most other popular versions, in particular note are the square stairs. There are quite a few IDS's present too moreso than in the original game. The room layout does closely mirror other variants however.

The scrolling message is quite interesting, compared to 'altered' versions at least:

This is an original release minus any copy protection. Both disk and tape (.D64 and .T64) images are provided.

The game itself very closely mimics the Spectrum version, more so than the Amstrad version and plays very well and quite faithfully to the original.

Joystick (in P2) or keyboard to control:

    Infinite Lives: Y/N
    Unlimited Air: Y/N
    No Collision: Y/N

It should be noted the no collision cheat does not offer any protection against fire cells.

    Control keys are:

  10. JetSet Willy 2 (C64)

JetSet Willy 2 'Final Frontier' for the Commodore C64 written by J.Darnell and S.Birtles

This is an original tape (.tap format) minus any protection system. It is otherwise unaltered.

The game itself plays very well and mimics the Spectrum and Amstrad versions. There are a few extra rooms (an IDS sequence if you jump into the Bathroom toilet) and some names are slightly different too.

The 'game over' sequence is completely different and is not too far off what is seen in Technician Ted (Spectrum and Amstrad versions) , there are three pictures of the 'sequence' in the listing.

  11. JetSet Willy 2 Plus (Amstrad)

JetSet Willy 2 + , an updated version of JSW1, MM and MM3 by Andrew Cadley.

Please note this disk image will only work on the 6128Plus machine as it uses some features that are not present on the conventional 6128 machine.

More colours per screen than the usual Amstrad versions are present, as these run in Mode1 which is typically limited to 4 colours out of a pool of 27. This version does not seem particularly hampered by this limitation despite it appearing to use Mode1, likely a feature of the Plus hardware. The enhancement is greatly appreciated.

If curious about the screen modes and limitations then the cpcwiki page here is as good as any place to read up.

It should be noted the normal Amstrad JSW/MM pokes do not work on these versions, likely due to the code being relocated in different memory banks or addresses.

Upon loading you are presented with a choice of JetSet Willy+ , Manic Miner+ or Manic Miner 3+

JetSet Willy+ is in reality JSW2 aka "The Final Frontier" , the Amstrad version being written by D.P.Rowson and S.Wetherill

Manic Miner+ is conventional Manic Miner, again the Amstrad version being written by DP.Rowson and S.Wetherhill

Manic Miner 3+ is the third party remake of MM aka "Manic Miner 3 - Tales from a parallel universe" , written by Lee Tonks. The Spectrum version can be found here on the World of Spectrum site. As far as I am currently aware MM3 was never ported over to the Amstrad by its original author.

The games themselves play as well as the originals although as noted they are distinctly more colourful. The screenshots should assist with this. They all share the same scrolling message (see below) and 'JSW' style title screen too.

Its noted there is no timer / clock counter active in any of the games and in the MM games there is no 'air' supply as such. The JSW style clock is displayed forever locked at 00:00AM. The 'items collected' total also functions in MM indicating they likely share a common core codeblock.

The only very minor correction I felt had to make was to the disk image loader itself to stop it attempting to autoload a game if an accidental keypress was detected as well as a very over enthusiastic 'timeout and load' effect. I also added a small message to the menu page as well to indicate its compatibility as there is otherwise no indication anywhere of it not being suitable for the other machines and attempting to load it on a conventional 6128 just results in an eventual lockup of the machine.

I would consider this a 'bug fix' so I have included this 'fixed' disk image as well as the original untouched one. There are no other changes to it at all.

The versions are clearly marked as to which is which:

"JSW2 Plus" and "JSW2 Plus Fixed Menu" , both are standard disk (.dsk) images.

The scrolling message complete with typo's for all the games reads as follows:

  12. JetSet Willy 2 (Amstrad) Cheat versions

JetSet Willy 2 "The Final Frontier" for the Amstrad CPC range of machines, complete with cheat options.

If you are looking for original, unchanged versions please see here for JSW1 and here for JSW2

Two disk (.dsk) images are provided, offering different ranges of cheats. Both images work with the 464,664 and 6128 machines. Both lack the keypad entry system.

Cheat1 is the more basic and offers Infinite lives and / or immunity to moving enemies. There is no protection against fire cells nor against high falls.

Cheat2 is the advanced one, offering a lot more, these are offering during game load:

    Infinite lives: Yes/No
    Fall any height: Yes/No
    Nasties kill: Yes/No
    Fire cells kill: Yes/No

In addition to those selectable options, three extra features are provided during gameplay too:

Pressing 1 will disable guardians. Press 2 to re-enable them.

Pressing 3 will disable gravity ( ! ) , pressing 4 will restore it. This feature deserves a little more explaination, simply when you disable gravity, when Willy jumps up he won't fall down and you can move left / right 'mid air' if desired. This is a lot more useful than it sounds as you can simply jump up in a clear space then move across to reach an object.

Finally, pressing keypad 3 will cause Willy to lose a life. This is helpful if you have managed to get stuck somewhere, such as the conveyor on The Yacht for instance. Losing a life will usually return him to a "safe start" position in that screen.

I would recommend using 'cheat2' , 'cheat1' is provided simply for completeness.

    Enjoy!

  13. JetSet Willy (Amstrad) Cheat versions

JetSet Willy for the Amstrad CPC range of machines complete with cheat options.

If you are looking for original, unchanged versions please see here for JSW1 and here for JSW2

Two disk (.dsk) image files are provided and one tape version. One is only compatible with the 464 (it is clearly marked) and based on the original release. The other is suitable for the 464,664 and 6128 and is based on the Re-Release. Neither of these retain the keypad protection either.

The tape version is Speedlock protected and manually edited directly to provide infinite lives.

The disk versions provided offer the following cheat options during game load:

    Infinite lives: Yes/No
    Harmless enemies: Yes/No

It should be noted that there is no protection against high falls nor any against fire cells, however given the JSW1 for the Amstrad uses a very similar "safe start" as seen in the Spectrum (and Amstrad!) versions of JSW2, a high fall in most cases will not result in an infinite death scenario unless you are very careless.

  14. JetSet Willy 2007 (Atari) ZX Port

A JetSet Willy Remake for the 8bit Atari range of machines. This is a port / conversion of the original Spectrum edition.

The game plays very well, the colours are obviously different due to the differing hardware and it features the same 'in game' tune as used in the original "official Tynesoft" JSW release for this machine. For the official original release see here

The quality of the screenshots I've taken is not brilliant however from what I understand this is more an emulation issue as I'm not 100% familiar on its correct configuration for these machines.

The .zip contains a standard .xex file format suitable for most emulators.

The title screen and scrolling message also mimic the Spectrum version, as do the rooms and sprites in general. The scrolling message reads:

    Enjoy!

  15. JetSet Willy (Atari)

JetSet Willy for the 8 bit Atari range of machines, released by Tynesoft, the same company who also released the Acorn/BBC Micro versions of JSW and MM.

    The .zip includes three files:

1x .cas tape file and 2x disk / image files (.atr and .xex)

The game does not play too well mainly due to collision detection being a little bit over enthusiastic, however this could be down to hardware emulation issues. This is apparent in the screenshots too.

    The scrolling message reads:

The game itself is a reasonably faithful in layout but it is a cut down version, there being less sprites per screen as well as quite a few of the original mansion screens missing, although to be fair it was a squeeze no doubt to get what there is in as such.

In particular regarding the room layout there is no access to the right of The Wine Cellar (so there is no Forgotten Abbey or Under The Drive etc) present and the top rooms are also missing, right from Nomen Luni takes you to Rescue Esmeralda and from there to Top of the house. A map is also provided as a download too although it is present in our Maps topic here too.

Plenty of emulators to choose from however if stuck for choice Altirra is quite reasonable to use and offers plenty of emulation options.

  16. Manic Miner (Amstrad) Cheat versions

Manic Miner for the Amstrad CPC range of machines, these versions offer built in cheats to make game play a little bit easier.

If you are after for original unaltered files please look here instead.

Two disk (.dsk) versions are provided, both are compatible with the 464,664 and 6128. One is the original Software Projects branded and the other is the re-released Amsoft branded. Apart from the loading screen and very small wording variations in the cheat options selection they are practically identical.

The range of optional cheats is identical, selectable during loading:

    Infinite lives: Yes/No
    Infinite air: Yes/No
    Immunity to moving enemies: Yes/No
    Level skip: Yes/No
    Starting Level: 1-20

It should be noted that the 'immunity' cheat does not provide any protection against fire cells! The level skip is activated during game play by pressing the ESC key and simply moves you forward one cavern.

  17. JetSet Willy 2 (Amstrad)

JetSet Willy 2 aka "The Final Frontier" for the Amstrad CPC range of machines, written by D.P.Rowson & S.Wetherill

Two original tape (.cdt) versions are provided:

V1 is the first original release and has the keypad code. It should be noted this does not run properly on the 6128 machines.
V2 is the later / re-release version. This is compatible with the 464,664 and 6128. There is no keypad.

I'd recommend using V2 in most cases, although the keypad codes (all seven pages) of them are included in the download if required.

The game is about identical to the Spectrum version, which is no surprise as this version was written first then ported across to the Spectrum. The 'in game' tune is different but the game play is much the same.

  18. Screen Compress

This is a very much modified version of the Spectrum 'Artist' screen compressor.

I have rewritten most of it to make it a lot, lot easier to use as well as more friendly and more friendly by providing 'step by step' instructions during its use.

Simply load the compressor then load in your screen$. You can elect to load in a normal screen or a headerless file, the latter was added as it permits you to load in a screen that is shorter than standard length if necessary for any reason too.

Once a screen is loaded, the reduced size is shown and you are offered the option to save it or load a new one. Also offered is a simple colour change for the menu itself as its new default is black text on yellow, but a keypress will cycle through other combinations.

The code is saved at 28350 however it is completely relocatable (above this address) without further modification. It is generally recommended to issue a CLS after loading the screen code before executing it and ideally the paper and ink colours should be set the same before the CLS but this is completely optional.

  20. Manic Miner (Amstrad)

Manic Miner for the Amstrad CPC range of machines.

Both disk (.dsk) and tape (.cdt) versions are present as well as the original Software Projects release and the Amsoft Re-Release

The scrolling message reads as follows:

Note in particular the original Software Projects release only tends to function properly on the 464 machine! It is recommended to use the Amsoft branded Re-Release if playing on this machine. On an emulator simply switch to use a 6128 instead. Manual pokes are available to rectify this if its a concern on a real machine however but the game code is practically identical between the original and the Re-Release, the only 'real' change is the loading screen itself.

The game plays just as well as the original Spectrum version and with the exception of the last cavern it is near identical to that version too. Why the last cavern is different remains a mystery as on the BBC Micro version as well the last cavern (and a few others) are different too.

  21. JetSet Willy (Atari ST)

JSW for the Atari ST range of machines, written by Paul Taylor and Carl Whitwell

This very closely mimics the Spectrum version, right down to the font and sound effects. The 'jump' sound effect is slightly different and is more like the BBC Micro version in that its a higher pitch.

The only real addition (apart from the scrolling message change) is a built in attract mode, this is very similar to the one in JSWED but without displaying Willy on each page. It does not appear to go through every room however.

The Attic Bug and Banyan Tree bugs are fixed, and the Conservatory Roof layout mimics the BBC Micro version (or the JSW2 version, whichever you prefer) , a screenshot of this room is shown.

The other "minor issues" are still present:

Its possible to leap off the top of The Watch Tower
The Beach object still counts as two
The Swimming Pool object is 'auto collected'
The 'Landing Invisible Object' has been relocated to The Hall and it has a suitable wine glass shape applied, a screenshot of this is shown.

There's no 'writetyper' built in unfortunately. It may have another key-combination to do this however no doubt various pokes are available anyway.

There is no built in Keypad protection on this release and after examining it with an alternative one, I'm 99% confident this is 'original' as intended.

  22. Screen Attributes Display

This is a small tool to dertermine what attributes are being used on the screen and where. This may prove quite useful if you intend to split them out from the pixels and wish to find any errant incorrectly coloured blocks.

It should be noted this is a tool rather than a solution in itself. :)

It is very simple to use, simply load and run it.

You are offered the option to load in a real screen$ file or if you have an .scr you can use this instead. The next option offers a choice of enabling 'OVER' or not to overwrite the pixel data and finally a choice of 5 fill characters to choose from.

Generally the asterisk is the best choice, combined with overwrite being enabled as ultimately (although the output is not pretty) it will show you if you have any ink blocks where there should not be any.

  23. Basic Lister

This is a slightly updated (by myself) and tweaked version of two programs published a long time ago in Y.S

There was a *LIST and a *LOAD to load / view protected Basic however they appeared to not work too well so I have updated them into one working file.

The idea is simple: This program will load in a piece of Basic and show you what is really present, stripped of any of its protection. This is quite useful to determine if floating point values have been used and / or for protected loaders such as Speed-Lock and similar.

It should be noted this is a tool to assist, not a solution in itself.

It is very simple to use. Simply load and run it, then load in the Basic loader in question. Once it has loaded, it will be displayed (ignore any error messages) showing what is 'really' there.

  24. Manic Miner PC

Manic Miner for the IBM PC range of machines by Andy Noble.

The download contains three versions as follows plus a small bonus too. All versions are complete and unmodified in any way (hence a .zip for each inside the main .zip) , they also include their original unmodified readme file, a requirement for distribution.

0.75 , This is one of the earliest ones available, it also includes some of the Blitz Basic source code too. Please note this version needs a 32bit operating system, it will not function on a 64bit machine.

0.79 , This is a slightly later version with a few bug-fixed applied. The good news is this will run on a 32bit or 64bit machine without any real issue as such.

1.51 , A later version, again this is like 0.75 and requires a 32bit Operating System to function.

The screenshots were taken using a 64bit OS using version 0.79. To play the 32bit versions you will either need a 32bit Operating System or perhaps an alternative solution:

    1. DosBox would work quite well
    2. If you are using WIndows7 Pro or Ultimate you will be able to obtain XP-Mode as a download from Microsoft. This is more or less a complete VM using 32bit XP and would be ideal
    3. Another alternative would be to use something like VirtualBox or VirtualPC but with these you would have to supply your own OS such as XP / 2K / 98 / possibly MS-Dos

The bonus is the source data as well as some of the graphics and sound effects. Although these are present in one of the versions above, it seemed prudent to also split them out into a separate file for convenience too.

Given the speed of modern computers, running the game on "slow" or "boring" speed is ideal. On the main title page press F1 to get to the options page.
