  1. JetSet Willy 2 (Amstrad)

JetSet Willy 2 aka "The Final Frontier" for the Amstrad CPC range of machines, written by D.P.Rowson & S.Wetherill

Two original tape (.cdt) versions are provided:

V1 is the first original release and has the keypad code. It should be noted this does not run properly on the 6128 machines.
V2 is the later / re-release version. This is compatible with the 464,664 and 6128. There is no keypad.

I'd recommend using V2 in most cases, although the keypad codes (all seven pages) of them are included in the download if required.

The game is about identical to the Spectrum version, which is no surprise as this version was written first then ported across to the Spectrum. The 'in game' tune is different but the game play is much the same.

  2. JetSet Willy 2 (cheat) BBC Micro

Jetset Willy 2 for the BBC Micro, written by Chris Robson.

The download contains two .ssd disc files, both the 'cut down aka tape version' and the 'full disc' version.

Note these are cheat versions with immunity applied. The author of the cheat/patch is unknown.

The 'disc' version is about 95% identical to the Spectrum version in its layout and most of the familiar rooms are all present and correct. This version features all the mansion too, they are loaded in chunks as you progress through the game.

It closely mirrors the Spectrum version in the map layout.

  4. JetSet Willy 2 (Amstrad) Cheat versions

JetSet Willy 2 "The Final Frontier" for the Amstrad CPC range of machines, complete with cheat options.

If you are looking for original, unchanged versions please see here for JSW1 and here for JSW2

Two disk (.dsk) images are provided, offering different ranges of cheats. Both images work with the 464,664 and 6128 machines. Both lack the keypad entry system.

Cheat1 is the more basic and offers Infinite lives and / or immunity to moving enemies. There is no protection against fire cells nor against high falls.

Cheat2 is the advanced one, offering a lot more, these are offering during game load:

    Infinite lives: Yes/No
    Fall any height: Yes/No
    Nasties kill: Yes/No
    Fire cells kill: Yes/No

In addition to those selectable options, three extra features are provided during gameplay too:

Pressing 1 will disable guardians. Press 2 to re-enable them.

Pressing 3 will disable gravity ( ! ) , pressing 4 will restore it. This feature deserves a little more explaination, simply when you disable gravity, when Willy jumps up he won't fall down and you can move left / right 'mid air' if desired. This is a lot more useful than it sounds as you can simply jump up in a clear space then move across to reach an object.

Finally, pressing keypad 3 will cause Willy to lose a life. This is helpful if you have managed to get stuck somewhere, such as the conveyor on The Yacht for instance. Losing a life will usually return him to a "safe start" position in that screen.

I would recommend using 'cheat2' , 'cheat1' is provided simply for completeness.

    Enjoy!

  5. JSW Keypad Trimmer

A simple Basic program to remove the Keypad data completely from the JSW game code. Load in your game code, load the 'trimmer', run it and save the game code afterwards.

    Two versions are provided:

    1. The basic keypad only version. This replaces the long pointless startup routine with a much shorter (32 bytes vs 10 bytes) and removes the following:

The keypad messages "Enter code at grid location etc" - 64 bytes starting 34187
    The keypad reading/display routines - 156 bytes starting 34463
The keypad graphics and attributes - 255 bytes starting 39680
The codes themselves - 178 bytes starting 40448

Note this does not remove (most) of the 'garbage data' sat in the sprite editing area as its not all stritcly keypad related. For that see (2) below...

    2. The slightly extended version. This does not remove any 'unused routines' , it merely expands slightly on the above as some random data is present in the sprite area, this will remove it too. See the screenshot of the before/after for this. It is not recommended to use this one on a third party game before checking said areas have not already been recycled for sprite or other data however it is recommended to use this on a standard game before editing it. To clarify this, as well as the above the following are also emptied:

    Source remnant - 64 bytes starting 39936
    Data remnant - 333 bytes starting 40627
    Data remnant - 1152 bytes starting 42624

  6. JetSet Willy (Dragon)

JetSet Willy for the Dragon 32/64 range of machines. These are tape .cas files.

Two versions are included as well as the four page code sheet.

V1 tends to ask for the code but the game seems to crash a bit, possibly due to emulation issues.
V2 (recommended) very rarely asks for a code and does not crash.

    Control keys:

Cursor Left / Right = Move left / right
    Shift or Space = Jump

    P = Pause
    C = Continue

    Q = Quieter / Volume -
    L = Louder / Volume +

    Shift +A = Abort

The game features a few screens not seen in other versions such as "The Guest Room" , "The Pub" , "Hall Of Mirrors" amongst others.

There is also a in-built cheat mode for game, allowing you to move to any room. To do this:

  7. JetSet Willy (Atari ST)

JSW for the Atari ST range of machines, written by Paul Taylor and Carl Whitwell

This very closely mimics the Spectrum version, right down to the font and sound effects. The 'jump' sound effect is slightly different and is more like the BBC Micro version in that its a higher pitch.

The only real addition (apart from the scrolling message change) is a built in attract mode, this is very similar to the one in JSWED but without displaying Willy on each page. It does not appear to go through every room however.

The Attic Bug and Banyan Tree bugs are fixed, and the Conservatory Roof layout mimics the BBC Micro version (or the JSW2 version, whichever you prefer) , a screenshot of this room is shown.

The other "minor issues" are still present:

Its possible to leap off the top of The Watch Tower
The Beach object still counts as two
The Swimming Pool object is 'auto collected'
The 'Landing Invisible Object' has been relocated to The Hall and it has a suitable wine glass shape applied, a screenshot of this is shown.

There's no 'writetyper' built in unfortunately. It may have another key-combination to do this however no doubt various pokes are available anyway.

There is no built in Keypad protection on this release and after examining it with an alternative one, I'm 99% confident this is 'original' as intended.

  8. JetSet Willy 2 (C64) Cheat

JetSet Willy 2 'Final Frontier' for the Commodore C64 written by J.Darnell and S.Birtles. This is a cheat version, based upon the original tape (.T64) file. The cheat author is currently unknown.

If you are looking for an original, unaltered JSW2 please see here instead.

Upon loading the following cheat options are offered:

    Unlimited Willy's ? Y/N
    Stop time counter ? Y/N

It should be noted there is no protection against high falls, guardians or fire cells. There is a 'practise' option but it is limited to a single screen typically so it is not quite what it seems.

    Controls:

    [O] Move Willy left
    [P] Move Willy right
    [F1] Pause game
    [F3] Music on/off
    [space] Jump
    [RS/RES] Restart game

  9. JetSet Willy 2 Acorn Electron

JSW 2 for the Acorn Electron. The conversion itself was written by Chris Robson.

    This contains three files:

The tape (.uef) as well as both types of disc image (DFS .ssd and ADFS .adf)

The game code is identical however the disc versions include a loading screen too. Given the Electrons memory this version is in effect based on the 'tape' BBC Micro version, which is quite cut down. In summary most of the 'Space' screens are present but very few of the Mansion screens.

  10. JetSet Willy (Atari)

JetSet Willy for the 8 bit Atari range of machines, released by Tynesoft, the same company who also released the Acorn/BBC Micro versions of JSW and MM.

    The .zip includes three files:

1x .cas tape file and 2x disk / image files (.atr and .xex)

The game does not play too well mainly due to collision detection being a little bit over enthusiastic, however this could be down to hardware emulation issues. This is apparent in the screenshots too.

    The scrolling message reads:

The game itself is a reasonably faithful in layout but it is a cut down version, there being less sprites per screen as well as quite a few of the original mansion screens missing, although to be fair it was a squeeze no doubt to get what there is in as such.

In particular regarding the room layout there is no access to the right of The Wine Cellar (so there is no Forgotten Abbey or Under The Drive etc) present and the top rooms are also missing, right from Nomen Luni takes you to Rescue Esmeralda and from there to Top of the house. A map is also provided as a download too although it is present in our Maps topic here too.

Plenty of emulators to choose from however if stuck for choice Altirra is quite reasonable to use and offers plenty of emulation options.

  12. Manic Miner - Two Chance Challenge

A small variation on the original.
Two lives are provided per cavern.
How far can you honestly get without rollbacks or any cheating ? 🙂

Note 1 : Although there is a small piece of patch code in the loader to try to ensure the main loader works in later Spectrum models, it may be best to load in 48K mode on these machines.
Note 2 : There is a very simple 'anti tamper' check present but rather than punish the player, it will simply remove the detected cheat.

    Otherwise, enjoy.

  14. Jet Set Willy Mono Plus

    JSW Mono Plus
A small expansion on the existing 'JSW Mono' variant offering a choice of colours!
The download consists of a .tap tape file and a small 'tech notes' text file covering a few details of interest.

Although the patch to set 'JSW Mono' is readily available from John Elliott's site (home of the brilliant JSWED tool) and  it is indeed quite possible to find a prebuilt game file with it applied from other sites, both with and without bug fixes it is by it's nature slightly limited in what colours are permitted.
Monochrome does not always have to mean white text on black paper!

Upon loading the player is presented with a neat and tidy menu offering a range of suggested presets, selectable by a letter key:
    White ink with black paper
White ink with black paper and bright enabled (This is the original 'JSW Mono patch' effect output when applied to the game engine)
The above options are also offered in inverse! That being white paper with black ink, again available with or without bright.
A basic 'green screen' choice is available, limited to green ink on black paper but with the option of bright enabled or not. Thought was given to offering an 'amber' choice too as 'back in the day' there were amber 'mono' monitors around as well as the more common green-screen and black-white ones. Unfortunately it was felt that the Spectrum's yellow was not really quite adequate enough to pass itself off as an amber mono display, so the option of a preset for this is not initially offered however, read on about choices...

To allow further visual entertainment, the player may select their own preference for desired ink , paper , bright and (if they insist!) flash options. A basic sanity check is applied to prevent the player choosing the same value for paper and ink and a further check to confirm they really do want flash enabled. Upon completion of picking the colour options the text for the custom option is displayed in those colours.
Please refer to screenshots of the menu, it was written to be self-explanatory as far as sensibly possible.
The player may at this stage change their mind and pick a default value or re-enter a choice of custom values.

When happy pressing the 'R' key will execute the game code, this is necessary even if one of the pre-defined choices is selected. A basic check is present to ensure an option has been chosen before the 'R' key will function as no option is selected by default. The currently "active choice" is shown by the menu letter control key being set to flash. Again please take a look at the screenshots.
We hope you enjoy this small expansion tweak to the existing 'JSW Mono' !

  15. JetSet Willy 2 BBC Micro

Jetset Willy 2 for the BBC Micro. Written by Chris Robson.

    The download contains several files:

    1. A tape version as a .uef file , this is commonly referred to as the 'tape' or 'cut down' version
    2. A disc version of the tape version as an .ssd , this is just a .ssd of the .uef above
    3. A disc version of the disc version

That may not make sense but the 'tape' version is very much cut down and a lot of the 'mansion' rooms are absent to make room for the 'space' rooms instead.

The 'disc' version is about 95% identical to the Spectrum version in its layout and most of the familiar rooms are all present and correct. This version features all the mansion too, they are loaded in chunks as you progress through the game.

  16. JSW Fixer

A simple small file to load before the main JSW tape. It provides the following fixes to the standard game:

    1. The second keypad code is always accepted
    2. The invalid arrow in The Attic is rectified
    3. The impossible Fire Cell in the Conservatory Roof is removed
    4. The single Earth Cell in Banyan's Tree's trunk is replaced with an Air Cell
    5. The air ink for Swimming Pool is changed to allow Willy to collect the item by himself
    6. The top distance on ropes was reduced preventing Willy from accidentally jumping up where it was not intended
    7. The interface1 pause lockup is fixed
    8. The hidden First Landing item was moved to The Hall and given a shape borrowed from West Wing Roof

It should be noted this is intended for a standard game, its effects on third party variants of JSW is unpredictable.

The original JetSet Willy for the Commodore C64, written by Shahid Ahmad.

A tape file (.t64) is provided.

The game plays quite differently in 'feel' to most other popular versions, in particular note are the square stairs. There are quite a few IDS's present too moreso than in the original game. The room layout does closely mirror other variants however.

The scrolling message is quite interesting, compared to 'altered' versions at least:

  21. Manic Miner Electron 2021

This is the Acorn Electron version of Manic Miner, written by "0xC0DE" and built from Toby Lobster's greatly updated Manic Miner for the BBC Micro ( you can find that here )
To quote the coder of this version, " 0xC0DE "

The files attached here are two .zips:
One containing four game files and two readme files, the original GitHub readme.md and a shortened plain text .txt of the same. Inside this zip are also the game files themselves, consisting of two tape .uef and two disc .ssd images, one for emulators and one for real machines.
The other .zip file contains the screenshots used here, for convenience.
    The game controls are:
    Z = Left
    X = Right
    RETURN = Jump
    DELETE/COPY = Pause / Un-pause
    Q/S = Music off / Music on
    ESCAPE = End game

  22. JSW 4-Bug Fixer

This is just a simple Basic program with the four bug fixes** in it as well as the keypad bypass. Its longer than it really should be by quite a way to make it easy to follow and edit if required.

Simply load and run it and play in the original JSW tape.

If you wished to save a 'modified' copy of the code block, simply delete line 440 or change it to include a STOP

** The 'Move invisible object from "Landing" to "Hall" fix' was very slightly tweaked to give the 'new' object a tiny square shape.

  23. Screen Attributes Display

This is a small tool to dertermine what attributes are being used on the screen and where. This may prove quite useful if you intend to split them out from the pixels and wish to find any errant incorrectly coloured blocks.

It should be noted this is a tool rather than a solution in itself. :)

It is very simple to use, simply load and run it.

You are offered the option to load in a real screen$ file or if you have an .scr you can use this instead. The next option offers a choice of enabling 'OVER' or not to overwrite the pixel data and finally a choice of 5 fill characters to choose from.

Generally the asterisk is the best choice, combined with overwrite being enabled as ultimately (although the output is not pretty) it will show you if you have any ink blocks where there should not be any.

  24. Basic Lister

This is a slightly updated (by myself) and tweaked version of two programs published a long time ago in Y.S

There was a *LIST and a *LOAD to load / view protected Basic however they appeared to not work too well so I have updated them into one working file.

The idea is simple: This program will load in a piece of Basic and show you what is really present, stripped of any of its protection. This is quite useful to determine if floating point values have been used and / or for protected loaders such as Speed-Lock and similar.

It should be noted this is a tool to assist, not a solution in itself.

It is very simple to use. Simply load and run it, then load in the Basic loader in question. Once it has loaded, it will be displayed (ignore any error messages) showing what is 'really' there.

  25. Thoroughly Modern Willy

    Thoroughly Modern Willy v0.02
    --------------------------------
    (April 23rd spectrumcomputing.co.uk minigame competition)
Whilst sorting through boxes in an attempt to tidy up the attic, Willy stumbled across some machinery left by the previous owner, Dr Jones. As he investigated further, he knocked a switch over and the machinery started to hum into life. Before Willy can say 'Quirkafleeg' there is a blinding light...
As his sight returns, Willy determines he is no longer in the attic. He's been flung into the future - space year 2018 to be precise. Willy proceeds to do what he's always done when faced with a tight spot - collect all the flashing objects - strewn across six screens - and hope for the best!
Some hints for getting by in the future:
    - Switches can change the layout of a room and make areas safe or unsafe.
    - It's unwise to move around in the dark.
    - Willy's box moving skills are still useful in the future.
