Oh i could have some fun with that, especially in the Ballroom West and The Off Licence!

If you teleport into the right-hand side of the adjacent wall, then you can collect the item at your leisure!

I think the Conservatory Roof one is impossible, even with a rapid teleport in-and-out, because the check for Fire cells occurs before the check that picks up items in the Main Loop of the code!

However, if you POKE an arrow into that room at the right height, it will pick up all four items for you!  (Because arrows are White, and any White Ink entity can collect an item!)

Actually i considered this to be more of bug, the easter egg i'm referring to is the built in 'WRITETYPER' cheat  :) only used to bypass the Attic which i thought might be acceptable as there's no items to collect in there

I'd suggest that Writetyper was very much an intended Easter Egg though - he can't have written it into the code by accident!!

I think Andy might be right though, that if you leave climbing the East Wall until last (that being the only route which requires you to pass through The Attic - if you use the shortcut from Esmeralda to the Ballroom), then you can complete the game without using Writetyper.

These screenshots are from the Micro (12 room) JSW game that accompanied Andy's 'loader builder' guide.  I thought they deserved a bit of an airing, since we did something a bit different with The Banyan Tree pair of screens (progress further up and beyond to Under the Roof was forbidden!)

It provides a nice little puzzle (Willy has to go 'up and over' to collect the upper Banyan Tree item), it allows the Bit of Tree Bird guardian to have a wider flight path, and it means that the Blue 'Water' cells are restricted to the tree's root system, which seems more logical than the classic screen arrangement!

Of course what these screenshots don't show is the increasingly erratic behaviour of the sprites which start to change orientation going sideways instead of up and down or vice versa .. and even diagonal, eventually they completely freak out and jump all over the screen, also try entering a 'rope' room such as the swimming pool, during the advanced stages of bugginess Willy gets completely snagged in the rope and it's nigh on impossible to escape the room, yet in spite of all the carnage the game engine itself remains functional, try as i might i have not yet got it to completely lock up or reset

Firstly, apologies if a similar topic like this has already been created elsewhere feel free to delete it if there is a better one, i did have a look around and couldn't really find anything like it so i thought i'd create a thread where everyone can contribute to the list of all known oddities found in the game.

Secondly this is not a request for help in working around these bugs, more really a point of reference and maybe a source of information for newcomers and those who didn't play the game so much and don't already know about them all and one single place where they can be looked up

I thought i might start with the most obvious and well documented ones the first four of which prevent the game from being completed:

'The Attic' - The most famous and destructive of them all which of course is triggered when Willy ventures into the attic. A rogue arrow causes all manner of destruction around his house and ultimately renders the game unplayable.

'Conservatory Roof' which features the booby-trapped item, or maybe it's just a little too closely guarded by a 'fire-cell'

'The Banyan Tree' with what looks like an out of place earth-cell right of the trunk meaning that Willy cannot make his way upwards to the Bit Of Tree above

'First Landing' with the phantom object which is neither seen nor collectible.

The rest of these are comparatively harmless or can be avoided
    such as...

'The Nightmare Room' featuring the ugly green blob which, when i first encountered it i thought it was a fire-cell and so i spent many a long afternoon trying to work out how to collect the object without hitting it... turns out that it was just a conveyor belt ... who knew?

'Cuckoo's Nest' with the somewhat disorientated saw that doesn't change direction when it comes back the other way

'Under The Roof' with the phantom 'fire-cells' that prevent Willy from dropping out of the bottom of the screen to the right of the tree trunk, interestingly enough this one was even left in the 'Nightmare Edition' ... maybe Mr Smith deliberately left it there... who knows?

'The Beach' and 'The Roof' both feature a rope that Willy can jump from and reappear at the bottom of the screen

'Rescue Esmeralda' has, in all probability, an unintentional secret passage to 'Ballroom East' when jumping from the conveyor belt at the top right of the screen

'The Watchtower' also has one which takes Willy all the way to the 'Off Licence'

'The Swimming Pool' has an object which Willy needs to make no effort whatsoever to collect, he merely needs to enter the room and it's his

'The Orangery' Here Willy has been endowed with a magnetic head when jumping up and hitting the ledge from the stairs at the bottom left of the screen - not so much a bug, more of a quirk
Apparently i never knew this but there is also a bug which means that the conveyors in rooms such as the West of Kitchen and Tool Shed are not drawn properly .. and the one in the Wine Cellar is not supposed to be there at all.

Finally there's that 'halo' effect where a nasty as a 'bright' blue background following it around, this is evident in 'I'm sure I've Seen This Before', the Emergency Generator and On A Branch Over The Drive

There's probably a few that i have missed, feel free to contribute!

Most of those 'quirky features' are mentioned in the Bugs and Trivia sections of SkoolKid's JSW disassembly:

    http://skoolkit.ca/disassemblies/jet_set_willy/index.html

I would add a couple of comments:

The 'High Jump' entry covers the 'magnetic head' phenomenon (if you keep jump depressed when on a ramp, the code that determines Willy's exact y-coordinate when he's on a ramp is bypassed - if he happens to have an Earth cell above him then he can appear to 'hover'!)

If Willy were to fall down on the right-hand side of Under the Roof then he would enter an Infinite Death Loop, so the 'bug' (which is caused by the fact that there are Fire cells at the very top of the screen, directly above where you are trying to get him to drop off the bottom) is actually quite a useful artefact of the code!

Yes it can get very um 'wild' :D

You can end up with things like the static chandelier moving about.

Regarding the lockup: Once its started visit the Kitchen screens, either will do. Stay on it for about 30 seconds, enough time for the 'Chef's to move across and back. Now head to 'Under the MegaTree'. Climb the tree to 'Inside the MegaTrunk'

This screen will really set it off. Watch the room description / time / item counter start to go a bit odd as it starts to get out of place and 'count' other characters. The in game tune will also fall apart around this time too.

Quick method is just to go to 'Inside the MegaTrunk' and stay there for a minute but visiting the Kitchen first usually helps, also Quirkafleeg can do it, generally any room where the sprite pattern is now well out such as moving horizontally instead of vertically (Kitchen etc) can 'trigger' it.

Once you've finished just move around a few more screens too.

my theory is that he just completely forgot about it or maybe considered that back then when there were no emulators to speed up processes no one would be able to play the game for such a length of time that they would ever be able to witness the (lack of) time up sequence, one wonders what he might have come up with had he had more time .. perhaps an alternative ending with the foot being replaced with a giant 'Maria' or the devil character from 'entrance to hades' or maybe even the toilet?

Yup, i like it, i like the attention to detail with the clock coming down on Willy instead of the foot. I think there is always a temptation to take advantage of the extra resources available nowadays and go all out to create something far more elaborate but this is in keeping with Matthew Smith's original ideas, probably something he might have added in had he had more time.
