EPJack
Hope someone here can help. I have a friend that wants to play an old Speccy game, but can't remember the name. Here is the limited info he gave me. Possibly a Codemasters game. You have to collect a fish, possibly a fermented fish that allowed you to see in the dark, i.e. the cellar or basement. Sorry, that is all I have to go on. AI search came back with Jet Set Willy...
UncleWan
I asked a friend, and he asked AI. This is the AI's original words: What you describe as "collecting fermented fish for cellar/basement night vision" Codemasters games, most likely Overlord (Overlord) series (2007/2009). 1. Core matching point · Developer/Publisher: by Triumph Studios development, Codemasters issued. · Key prop: rancid herring (Rotten Herring), a fermented/rotten fish. · Function: can be used in dark areas (cellar, basement, hole Holes) for night/luminous vision, a core prop for exploring dark scenes. · Scenario: The game includes a number of catacombs, crypts, and castles The dark scene in the lower room and so on, exactly matches your description. But Overlord is a strategy war game on Specteum, so it's possible that it's just AI's memory confusion, making up things that don't exist. I asked another friend, and he said it might be the Dizzy series. But he played a few of the games and didn’t find any fermenting fish…So sorry I can't help you any further.🥲
fawtytoo
I thought Dizzy too. What about the Magic Knight series? Edit: Although Magic Knight is not Codemasters. Edited February 18 by fawtytoo

UncleWan
This page has some screenshots of Spellbound Dizzy: https://thekingofgrabs.com/2021/10/22/spellbound-dizzy-zx-spectrum/ Here is the map of Spellbound Dizzy: https://maps.speccy.cz/map.php?id=Dizzy5&sort=4&part=4&ath=0 Maybe you and your friend can take a look🙂
EPJack
Thank you for all suggestions. I've spoke to him today, and he is not positive it was Codemasters. Just that it was a cheap game, possibly a £1.99 budget title. After some digging and posting elsewhere, I'm leaning towards Spellbound (Mastertronic Added Dimension). I will see him tomorrow and ask. fawtytoo
Spellbound has a "red herring" item but I don't think it does anything. Knight Tyme has a "tower fish" item but again, it does nothing.
fawtytoo
Quote Get the red herring from the third floor, and the power-pong plant from the basement. You can now cast Fumaticus Protectium - and be able to pass through the gas room on the 1st floor. That's Spellbound (Magic Knight series). Is that what your looking for? EPJack
I've asked him, he's not sure... 😐 He is going to watch a few YT videos.
