Spider
A few pictures from an initial assessment of this version. The conversion itself was done by Cameron Else who also did the Manic Miner conversion. The game features the 'Padlock' protection. The 'start' key has been changed from Enter to Space too. The controls are different but still reasonably logical in that its alternating on the middle row (A to L) for left / right with shift for jump. Without sound the lives are still animated too. The 'Attic Bug' collection of issues appears to have been rectified as well as a few other things, you'll see by examining the screenshots. In brief, as I may of missed things just a general play with it for a while: 1. The 'impossible' object in the First Landing is still there but positioned just above the Monks head on the right hand side of the screen. 2. The earth cell in the Banyan Tree has been changed to water (Software Projects 'official' fix for the Spectrum version) 3. One fire block has been removed from the Conservatory Roof so its just possible to get all four items here (again, the 'official' fix) 4. The attic itself features two arrows as was originally intended, I note most 'fixes' tend remove either one or both of these. 5. The 'double object' in The Beach is still there however it does show two objects here, the second one a couple of blocks further down the beach. 6. There's no conveyor in 'I'm sure I've seen this before' 7. The up and down exits in Rescue Esmeralda still take you to the Emergency Generator / Ballroom. 8. The ramp in The Security Guard seems impossible to jump through for a quick suicide trip to Entrance To Hades. 9. The game sprite timing seems quite good as you can duplicate the Spectrum 'walkthrough' the kitchens screens without stopping and not running into a nastie. 10. The object in The Swimming Pool is in the same place as the Spectrum and other versions ie left side but its not 'auto collected' as there's no white ink on the background or the code is different. Difficult to say at this stage. On with some screenshots: Keypad 'Lock' and Joystick Option: Title: Game Over! In Game Screens:
zub
Cameron Else also did the conversion of JSW to MSX, which has very similar hardware to the Einstein. These both seem to be very faithful conversions, perhaps arguably
zub
Other differences spotted in the screenshots: The leftmost conveyor block on the Conservatory Roof has been replaced with platform, the platform block beneath that with sky, and the platform has been further extended another block to the left, most likely making it possible to complete the game without losing a single life. (The official fix has been made, too, but further changes have been made in addition.) The conveyor graphics in various rooms (e.g. The Nightmare Room, The Wine Cellar, West of Kitchen) have been fixed. Colour clash that would affect bright guardians on dark blue backgrounds is not present. (This typically appears worse under emulation and on 128Ks, IIRC.) zub
POKE 42438,180 (or POKE 42432,180 if you prefer) will make The Beach have two separate items, just as in the MSX version (and presumably the Tatung Einstein version).
