ZX Spectrum speedrun marathon (Aug 6th-8th)
jetsetdanny replied to RuffledBricks's topic in Site Links
Intrigued by your comments, MtM, I fast forwarded DigitalDuck's walkthrough of "Jet Set Willy II+" to the end and saw what happened. I have no reason to think that DigitalDuck's walkthrough used any other version than the Ve22 rv1 that Andy mentioned. He got the "lovely" "Well Done" screen after killing Willy in the Central Cavern (after entering it for a second time, with 330 items collected). I also re-entered the Central Cavern in my walkthrough, but I didn't try to kill myself (=Willy), so didn't get the "Well Done" screen. I didn't know you had to kill Willy to get this final message. I am pretty sure I can still do it - I'll have to dig up my RZX walkthrough where I can roll back to just before the end and try it. I'll do it when time permits and report back. -
I'm glad JSW Central has been helpful, MtM! 🙂 This increases my motivation to continue working on it, which is what I've actually been doing over the last few days - details to be announced soon 😎

A walkthrough of "Jet Set Willy 2+" by DigitalDuck, with a joint commentary by himself and RuffledBricks, can be watched here. I believe it would be very interesting for Derrick Rowson to listen to this commentary (and for anyone else interested in this version). Please let him know about it if you know where to find him 😉.

ZX Spectrum speedrun marathon (Aug 6th-8th)

Congratulations on your last two performances, RuffledBricks! 👍 I have watched your initial Jet Set Willy Any% (with two Game Over screens - I opened two drinks following your suggestion 😉). It was nice to hear your commentary interspersed with one by DigitalDuck. I was suprised at the way you did the "Tree Top", especially that it's faster than doing it the way I'm used to (going around and dropping down to the main floor level on the left). I also watched excerpts from DigitalDuck's run of "Jet Set Willy 2+". Again, it was interesting to hear your joint commentary on it. It was particularly interesting to see this relatively new version played and discussed. I will go back and watch more of it if/when time allows, as well as your JSW race against DigitalDuck 🙂 . -

Congratulations on winning the WRITETYPER race, RuffledBricks, and on your other performances! 👍 The best of luck for tonight's activities! -
MtM, for reference, the thread concerning Norman Sword's "Manic 40 Miner" is here. A couple of questions to Norman Sword: 1. In the beginning of that thread you said, "This is NOT meant to be a playable version. It was just a test routine." Is this still the situation? From a quick look I've had it looks like there's no issue with playing the game. I haven't tried to play it to completion yet, so I don't know about its completability. 2. If I am not mistaken, the latest released version was v. 6c. Is this correct? Are you going to release any more versions in the foreseeable future? 3. I would be happy to add the game to the list of versions of MM on JSW Central, and create an individual page for it along with a description, screenshots, etc. Would you be OK with that? Is the time right for it? (meaning: it's unlikely there will be new versions released any time soon)

A list of games which I classify as "new games" using the original (or somewhat modified) Manic Miner game engine is here. These games (most of them, at least) are remakes of the original MM modified to the extent that I believe warrants classifying them as new games. A list of games which I classify as "Versions and minor mods of the original Manic Miner" is here. Among them is the Perpetual Motion version that JianYang mentioned (thanks for mentioning it!). Some MM games can also be found in the "Games using other engines" section or in the "JSW64" games section. These are games that play like MM, but use a different game engine. You can go from all of these lists to the individual pages created for each game. On all pages there are download options, including the official releases (typically ZIPs with text files included, etc.) and something I call "Direct Game Download", which are game files only in TAP and TZX formats (in most cases). Hence you can download the Perpetual Motion variant and all of the other new games and variants there from their individual pages, without having to extract them from the RZX files. I will refrain from recommending any particular game as I prefer to remain impartial and treasure and recommend them all 🙂 . I'm sure you it won't be difficult to find among them one (or more!) that will be enjoyable to play 🙂 . I am not sure which "mod with 40 levels" you mean. It may be "Manic Pietro" - it has two sets of caverns: 20 brand new ones and 20 original ones, so 40 in total.

I love looking at maps of JSW games, too, because they show clearly what each game is - a mini world of its own, where you can immerse, explore and enjoy 🙂 .

Thanks for fixing these issues, Andy! 👍

This is also truncated: https://jswmm.co.uk/files/file/55-jsw-ve22-rv1/ although I'm not sure if only the end of "December" is missing or something more essential perhaps.

This one: https://jswmm.co.uk/files/file/113-italian-and-spanish-versions-of-manic-miner/ is also truncated.

Andy, This post: https://jswmm.co.uk/files/file/124-manic-miner-a-ten-cavern-challenge/ is still truncated, I believe.

Norman Sword, the update of December 28, 2020 - was there any change in the game file at all? I understand there wasn't, but just want to make sure.

List or advice about the best modifications or remakes of Jet Set Willy
jetsetdanny replied to obsy's topic in JSW
Thanks for the link to the list of games on JSW Central, Andy! 🙂 (A belated) Welcome to the forum, Obsy! 🙂 As you can see, there are lots of new games made using the various JSW game engines, there are also many games which you could classify as remakes of the original JSW. I could highlight some games for you if you want (e.g. referring to size, or the amount of technical changes in relation to the original, the level of difficulty, etc.), but I would not be comfortable with saying which ones are "the best", because: a) I would be tempted to point to the ones I authored myself or co-authored 😀 ; b) Since JSW Central aims to embrace all pertinent games, I prefer to remain impartial and to cherish and admire them all 🙂 . -
Congratulations on achieving such fast loading times, Andy! 👍

MtM, thank you for the suggestion! I think it's an excellent one, and I would love to join you there, but, alas, I'm based in Washington, DC right now. I won't be able to travel to Play EXPO this time* 😯 *I *did* fly to Manchester just for the weekend back in 2019, for the Play EXPO when JSW's 35th birthday was celebrated, with the divine presence of Matthew Smith and the UK premiere of the film "WILLY: 48K About A Legend". I was wearing a custom-made T-shirt, too, with Willy's figure and the address of jswcentral.org on it. The thread about it is here. It was a great experience for me, meeting Matthew Smith and Richard Hallas and Daren Pearcy of the RZX Archive, and some other members of the scene 🙂 . In any case, I should be back in Europe next year or perhaps in two years' time, so then it will be much easier for me to travel to Britain for events such as this, and I'll definitely do it, circumstances permitting 🙂 .

Thanks to your comments, Ian, I have only now understood the joke in the names of the two opening rooms! 😮 It reminds me of a joke I heard a few years ago, after hundreds of thousands of Polish people moved to the UK. The joke is in Polish, but I'll relate it in English, explaining the final play on words. A recent Polish immigrant comes into a store in the UK. He is trying to buy something. He asks for "piłka" [in Polish "piłka" = "ball"]. He is explaining what he wants using gestures (showing the round shape, throwing, kicking, catching, etc.). Finally, the British salesperson catches on and says, "Oh, a ball!". The Polish guy confirms happily and says, "And now concentrate, please! What I need is piłka do metalu". [in Polish "piłka do metalu" = "hacksaw" 😄]

Done, with a link to this page 🙂 . Funnily enough, one of the comments on YouTube reads, "Love the Egyptian theme." Those of you who have access to Contributor Lounge may remember that I was commenting on the fact that "The Great Pyramid" usually refers to The Great Pyramid of Giza. I was expressing concern that someone may become interested in the game because of the title, and then be disappointed because the game is NOT about The Great Pyramid of Giza and does NOT really have any Egyptian theme. And now someone loves the Egyptian theme in the game! Apparently, I needn't have worried... 😄

A very positive review of "Willy Does the Great Pyramid!" is here 🙂 👍 .

Well, referring back to the small discussion in the other thread, I believe *this* alone proves that crem's effort is worth it 🙂 .

Automated generation of Jet Set Willy speedrun/walkthrough
jetsetdanny replied to crem's topic in JSW
My understanding is that crem is doing it because he wants to and I hope he's enjoying it (just as one can enjoy struggling to solve a forbiddingly difficult and frustrating JSW game, like one of Dr. Broad's extreme challenges 😉). For my part, I can say I'm enjoying following his updates and learning about the developments of the situation. Certainly, I would not encourage crem to continue his quest just for the sake of this enjoyment of mine, but I do trust he's enjoying it, too 🙂 . And the results, as Ian mentioned, may be useful by revealing manoeuvres and timinigs that human players have not come up with so far 👍. -
I think MtM is just kidding... or indeed using teleportation 😮
