    Hello Hervé and All,
    It's very impressive that you managed to create such a fine game in just three months! Did you use some earlier plans from 18 years ago or design everything from scratch?
    Thank you for the green light for adding the music. I will start working on it in the next few days, hopefully.
    Do keep us updated about the progress in your other projects! 🙂

    I finished "The Temple" for the first time a few days ago. It was a great pleasure to play, and actually quite an emotional experience for me after waiting for it for 18 years 😊. It is certainly worth the wait, though!
    I like the game a lot. It features Hervé's numerous signature themes that I like so much: mysteries, references to space and the planets, the UFOs, ancient civilizations, exotic animals and movies. And, of course, there is Yeti, as there is one in every game of Hervé's... well, there's even more than one, but I will not reveal the exact details of this 🙂 .
    "The Temple" has a lot of nice graphics, some interesting challenges (that would be VERY frustrating if I wasn't using Rollback when playing), and also some well-known sprites from Hervé's previous games that have now become classics.
    So, all in all, I am pretty sure you will enjoy exploring it and gathering the 256 items 🙂 . But before you do, I would like - with Hervé's kind permission and encouragement - to add some freshly-coded music to it. It will take me a while (with my spare time being severely limited and my other JSW-related activities running in parallel), so please bear with me.
    Thanks again, Hervé, for letting me carry out the first playtest of "Willy in the Islands of Mystery (Part II: The Temple)"! 👍It was a true privilege and a great pleasure 😊.

    Hello everyone, how to modify English letters in the game? Currently, I have edited 12 rooms, including modifications in sprites. I hope it can have comprehensive modifications.
    Later  l will try to modify the music。I am researching 'A Miner Triad' by Richard Hallas.

    Thanks for the feedback, Willie! 🙂
    Expanding and reviewing the "Links" section is the last one among my 'Higher priority' tasks for the future. I am aware of the fact that some links are outdated, and I do have various other links to add. I will definitely work on this, although I don't want to make any commitments as to when. Let's say, later this year... 🙂
    Regarding the non-Spectrum MM and JSW games, here's what the situation looks like from my point of view:
    My primary interest are MM and JSW games for the ZX Spectrum, i.e. mainly games using the MM and JSW engines. This means that other platforms are not among the priorities. Please note also that - strange as it may sound - my primary interest are *games* using the MM and JSW engines (preferably: *new games*, not just minor mods of the originals), NOT the original MM and JSW themselves. In other words, I'm really interested in *new* MM & JSW games that people create for the ZX Spectrum, NOT in MM and JSW versions created for other platforms or their remakes.
    Please note I've talked about my primary interest and priorities. I would *not* discard devoting some time and attention to MM and JSW and their remakes for other platforms in a hypothetical future. However, I want to dedicate my time and energy to my priorities. And the problem is that I have so much to do regarding the Spectrum games that in the foreseeable future I don't see how I could spare any time for non-Spectrum stuff.
    My general attitude to the passion that MM/JSW games are for me is one of doing things very seriously. If I record an RZX recording, I want it to be very good; I will re-record it and re-record it again if I see reasonable room for improvement. If I prepare information about a new game, I want it to be accurate and well written. It takes me a long time to prepare it. All this takes a lot of time, and I get frustrated when I don't have enough time for doing things I really want to do.
    If I decided to add a list of non-Spectrum MM and JSW games to JSW Central, I would want to do it well. I would *have* to devote a lot of time to investigate this subject, and that would take time away from my Spectrum-related priorities. I am not willing to give up the time I want to devote to my priorities to use it for other things.
    So the only way I could think of that a non-Spectrum section could be added to JSW Central in the foreseeable future is that it would have to be the fruit of a community collaboration. I would be willing to host a list of non-Spectrum MM and JSW games on JSW Central if I don't have to devote too much time to preparing it, and if I believe the list is good enough to be hosted on the site.
    The request you've made has been expressed before. Apparently, many people would be interested in having a complete, all-platform list of MM and JSW games. If enough people are interested and willing to collaborate, they could start creating such a list on this forum. Perhaps it will be perfectly enough for it to be hosted here, and if there is still interest in its being posted on JSW Central, I could certainly add it to the site once it's "complete enough" to be considered a serious product. Of course, due credit would be given to those who have contributed to the project, and I would make sure to emphasise that it is a community project hosted on JSW Central.
    So there...

    Thank you! 🙂 I´m glad you found new "pals" from my starters! 😉
    Yes, making a new thread is a good idea so these games won´t be hidden inside this topic. 🙂 I added a bit more description to China Miner, as I forgot it. I also forgot to add a link to Devil´s Gallery.
    All/most C64 games have a download link under those links I had added. If not, there are other C64 sites to download them. 🙂 At least there were some MSX download links in the past, where to download these few MSX games. Caverns of Titan surely is a downloadable game, as it was made to an annual MSX game competition.
    I think I have seen some 1980´s clones for other systems in the past when I was actively looking for old games in the web, not sure, though. 🙄 I mean MM and JSW are such things that there "must be" versions for the other systems. I will list few ones later, as they came just to my mind.
    On the Amiga there are several homebrews, I didn´t include them yet as I thought most people here will probably know them. I will add them, too, later, unless others are faster than I. 😉

    Thank you, Willie, that's a good start!  🙂 I haven't seen most of these games ever mentioned before. Since this is a thread dedicated to JSW Central, at the weekend I will move your information to a new thread that will be dedicated to creating an all-encompassing list of MM/JSW games and their remakes for all platforms and let's see if people add to it 🙂 .

    Thank you for your thoughts, made with excellent accuracy as always! 🙂 I understand your point, making very good pages for all of those clones and remakes will take time. But collaborating sounds like a good idea! 🙂

    Congratulations for the decade of JSW and MM! 🙂
    And some feedback, too. 🙂
    In the "Links" section, somebodies´ JSW related homepages are not working anymore. I am sorry, I remember just one, Visa Pimia, but there were others with the same problem, too. You can check all the links fast, though, by just clicking every link and see which ones won´t load. 🙂
    I know your site is about the Spectrum version JSW and MM games, but could there be a new section, other systems´ versions of JSW and MM and especially their remakes and clones?
    I know there are other sites, but at least JSW Remakes is not listing the remakes, or was missing at least some, and was updated around 25 years ago anyway, and, at least in the past, other JSW and MM related sites did not list every remake and clone.
    That´s why I thought to ask, if you could add such new section there, covering at least 1980´s computers ? 🙂 There are at least some C64 and MSX remakes and 1980´s games what are not listed on JSW/MM related sites, your site could fill that gap. 🙂
    If this suggestion makes your Spectrum soul to worry, just name that section as "Heretic games". 😆

    This March marked the tenth anniversary of JSW Central! 😁 While its development has been irregular over the years, my commitment to the site has remained strong, and I hope it is now closer than ever to its aspiration of being the "Resource centre for ZX Spectrum games using Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy game engines"—a far cry from its modest beginnings a decade ago.
    The website is currently fully up to date, listing all released games that fall within its scope of interest. Through its categorized lists, it makes a clear (though sometimes arbitrary) distinction between "new games" and files classified as "versions and minor mods" of the original JSW or MM. However, attention is given to all listed games: each has its own dedicated page with information, downloads, videos. Many pages also feature complete screenshot galleries (this is a work in progress).
    I have played and RZX-recorded every released MM and JSW game and variant. If you need help with a difficult game or simply enjoy watching playthroughs, you can download these recordings from JSW Central—except for one 'denied' title and the most recent releases, where I prefer to avoid "spoilers" too soon. You can also watch these videos on YouTube or download them from the Internet Archive. So far, I have created 178 videos, covering nearly all "new games" ever released (except for a few that are less than a year old).
    More importantly, throughout the development of JSW Central and for the sake of my playing and recording process, I have worked to encourage authors whose games were incompletable to release their bug-fixed versions. In a number of cases, I have prepared and published such versions myself with their authors' explicit approval. In cases where the authors could not be contacted, I took the responsibility of releasing completable versions to ensure that every new game and minor mod could be played to its designed conclusion.
    As a result, EVERY SINGLE NEW GAME EVER RELEASED, as well as all minor mods, now has a completable version. Players can enjoy them in full—whether that means reaching the toilet-run in most JSW games, seeing the game loop after the Swordfish sign in most MM games, or reaching a different, custom-made ending. These completable versions can be downloaded from each game's individual page on JSW Central.
    Plans for the Future
    Higher priority:
    - Adding new releases to the appropriate game lists and creating individual pages for them;
    - Reviewing and improving existing pages by adding more information where needed;
    - Continuing to create JSW Central videos for YouTube and the Internet Archive. The plan is to present a mix of: "new games" (after enough time has passed since release to avoid spoilers), "Advanced modifications" of the original JSW, "Artistic modifications" of the original JSW and the selected "Versions and minor mods" of the original MM and JSW—focusing on the most interesting ones. Starting with a future video marked JSWCL-201, these presentations will be interspersed with walkthroughs of other ZX Spectrum platformers, as showcasing minor JSW and MM variants back-to-back would be tedious—even for die-hard fans like myself. I hope this mix will keep things engaging for viewers while allowing me to gradually cover all MM and JSW versions worth showcasing;
    - Creating complete screenshot galleries for all games (except for some minor MM/JSW mods that are visually identical to the originals);
    - Developing the "Authors about their games" section whenever authors contribute content;
    - Expanding and reviewing the "Links" section.
    Lower priority:
    - Continuing the development of the "Games of MM and JSW interest" section;
    - Expanding the "Authors about their games" section using existing Readme files;
    Under consideration:
    - Adding a full archive of messages once published in the MM/JSW Yahoo! Group.
    There's still plenty to do to make JSW Central as complete as I envision it. I greatly appreciate input and feedback—if you notice anything missing, spot any errors, have corrections to suggest, or are an author who would like to contribute exclusive insights about your game, please don't hesitate to contact me at any time! 🙂

    It can freeze gameplay (usually at a critical moment!) , at least for me due to disk writing/caching. If I just want a quick video of play normally I'd do an .rzx, then play it back and record the playback as an .avi.
    Regarding rzx's in general: I'm the opposite, I record in Spectaculator and otherwise generally use ZXSpin. In this case I needed to record in ZXSpin because I could disable contention*** , but for .rzx the reason I use Spectaculator is simply as taking a snapshot doesn't pause the action something ZXSpin seems to do which is annoying. 🙂

    *** I think I'm capable (just) of doing it for real but its a fair bit of work.

    OK, I get it. I never really tried to record an .avi file straight from the emulator, so I wouldn't know about the issues that may arise, even though I also use Spin and Spectaculator (and nothing else; Spin to record games and Spectaculator play them back).

The plan is to present a mix of: "new games" (after enough time has passed since release to avoid spoilers), "Advanced modifications" of the original JSW, "Artistic modifications" of the original JSW and the selected "Versions and minor mods" of the original MM and JSW—focusing on the most interesting ones. Starting with a future video marked JSWCL-201, these presentations will be interspersed with walkthroughs of other ZX Spectrum platformers, as showcasing minor JSW and MM variants back-to-back would be tedious—even for die-hard fans like myself. I hope this mix will keep things engaging for viewers while allowing me to gradually cover all MM and JSW versions worth showcasing;
    - Creating complete screenshot galleries for all games (except for some minor MM/JSW mods that are visually identical to the originals);
    - Developing the "Authors about their games" section whenever authors contribute content;
    - Expanding and reviewing the "Links" section.
    Lower priority:
    - Continuing the development of the "Games of MM and JSW interest" section;
    - Expanding the "Authors about their games" section using existing Readme files;

    I have just uploaded a major update to JSW Central: a new section called "JSW Central videos", which lists all the videos I’ve made from my RZX recordings and provides links to both their YouTube pages and their Internet Archive pages. The YouTube links section is complete for all 178 videos released so far, while the Internet Archive links currently cover the first 60. The upload of the remaining videos is ongoing and, if all goes well, should be completed in the next couple of weeks.
    Additionally, links to Internet Archive downloads have been added on the individual games' pages below the embedded YouTube videos.
    A brand-new feature of this update is the possibility to download JSW Central videos from the Internet Archive—something I have introduced after much 'work behind the scenes' over the past few months. Videos can be downloaded both in their original Full HD quality and in their AI-upscaled 4K versions. These downloadable versions are the final products, often featuring slight improvements over their YouTube counterparts, such as adjusted title screens or better audio synchronization.
    While the walkthroughs themselves remain identical, I strongly encourage anyone wishing to download a JSW Central video to get the final version from the Internet Archive rather than the one available on YouTube 🙂.

    We've previously done a lot of research on emulator timing for speedrun fairness purposes.
    BizHawk, Fuse, SpecEmu, Spectaculator, Spud, and ZX Spectrum 4 all run at the same speed as the original hardware.
    ASpectrum, EightyOne, kjspeccy, Speccy, and Z80 Stealth all run at different speeds from the original hardware.
    There were others we couldn't test for various reasons.

    Hello Daniel and All,
    Thank you so much for this feedback after playing and testing my new game.
    It's always a nerve-wracking moment to deliver your creation and wait for feedback from those who will play it.
    And after so many years, I didn't know where I was going when I started three months ago...
    So I'm very relieved to know that this game can be a happy experience for all players.
    You have all the green lights to add your musical programming. Your proposal is a huge honor for me.
    Take the time you need by prioritizing all your commitments to the authors and time to manage your JSW Central site.
    Thanks again, Daniel, for the time you've already spent helping me and improving my games.
    Thank you to all of you, the community, for your interest in this project. Only a few more months to wait before you can play it !!!
    See you soon
    Hervé

    I wanted to try something else , although I (don't plan yet) on doing it.
    Attached are two three very short videos. Not going to record a 'standard' game
    First video is the standard game, I just chose to start recording in Master Bedroom, to try to emulate reasonably near the other two videos.
    The second video is the JSW 2024 game
    The third video is also the JSW 2024 game but this time without any lower memory contention.
    Video 1 was recorded in Spectaculator (last) , video 2 and 3 were recorded in ZXSpin.
    Also I noted that Spectaculator seems to playback at a higher speed, or its an optical illusion.
    There is a difference however the differing recording platforms (as ZXSpin decided to have a bit of a hissy fit about recording anyway) should be noticeable. Care was taken before recording to ensure that the setting were the same aka same 'later ULA timing' and 100% emulation speed at standard CPU cycles (3.54Mhz)

    Video 1
    (The original standard game)
    Video 2
    (The 'as released' JSW2024 game)
    Video 3
    (The 'as released' JSW2024 game but without any contention)

    EDIT... Decided to include a standard game anyway.
    EDIT2... Sorry about the video quality (or lack of) and the fact they don't start properly, that's likely the avi to mp4 conversion going astray.
    Further examination shows that the standard game with the original copy routines but without contention is also not far off comparable to the newer speed, that is they both seem to gain by an equal amount. A rewrite is needed to properly do it.
    😉 🙂

    My initial result was 11:11 pm. After completing and watching the recording I decided there were two places where I could have done better and so I re-recorded a good portion of the RZX file. This yielded an improvement of two minutes 🙂 .

    Unfortunately JasonMoilm is a sophisticated bot, IMPO. He (or rather it) posts messages that sound related to the thread they are posted in, but either make no sense or have no relation to the issues that are discussed.
    Let's see if "it" reacts to this post of mine before we ban it completely 😉 .
